Directions
As you review these documents concerning events that led up to the Trail of Tears, pay attention to the legal arguments offered, the political situation at the time,
and the viewpoints of those involved in the struggle on both sides of the issue. In at least three paragraphs, write an appeal to the American people from the
perspective of a Cherokee in 1836after the Cherokee signed Treaty of New Echota but before the government enforced removalinspired by the suggested readings. The more
aspects of the removal you consider (such as the legal issues, the political situation, or the social consequences), the higher level of critical thinking you will
demonstrate.
