Introduction
Writing an essay can initially appear as quite a challenge and 4,000 words can appear a
daunting task, however, if you are organised and methodical about it and work at it in a
consistent way you should be able to manage it and indeed feel a sense of real
achievement when you have completed it.

This handbook is intended to help you by telling you exactly what is expected of you and
by giving you a series of tasks that will help you to approach the essay in a series of
stages.
Part 1 of the handbook consists of information about the Essay, the Aims and
Objectives, the Learning Outcomes that you are expected to demonstrate and the
Assessment Criteria that will be used in the marking.
Part I also outlines the initial tasks that you will need to complete in order to start your
rationale. It is important that you keep to some tight deadlines and maintain a
momentum in order to stay on top of the project
Part II of the handbook will outline guidelines about drafting the essay, plagiarism,
referencing and about ways in which to structure your essay.

Part I
Aims and Relevance of this Unit
This unit offers you the opportunity to deepen your insights into contemporary art and
design practices, issues and the critical debates associated with them. Programmes of
study, which are largely self-determined but supported by tutorial guidance are aimed at
helping you to create a context in which you can place your emerging practical work so
that ultimately your major project will have an underpinning critical and contextual
rationale.
Syllabus Content
This unit will involve both lectures and smaller group seminars. You will also be
encouraged to use galleries and museums as a learning resource. You will also be
encouraged to look to professional practice as a means of informing your learning.
The lectures will be supported by critical discussions based in your studio, and seminars
that will look at the ideas and practices underpinning visual cultural production
essentially from a critical but also contemporary perspective. You will also be involved in
presentations, visits to galleries, museums or other relevant sites and individual tutorials.
From time to time there will be seminars given by professional practitioners and creative
industry entrepreneurs.
Key to learning (and assessment) throughout the programme will be the expectation that
you will be able to research ideas relevant to visual culture, engage with a range of
selected reading material.
Core learning outcomes
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
• Identify theoretical perspectives underpinning art and design and their relationship to
global discourses in art and design
• Conceptualise and respond to the findings of your research and communicate the
results effectively in written and visual forms.
Threshold standards
In order to pass the assessment you will need to:
• Write an essay, which translates personal research into a coherent analysis of a
chosen topic.
• Independently engage with ideas in research and practice
• Carry out research into a range of critical contexts that are relevant to your
creative discipline, and reflect on those contexts.
A weighting of 70% of this unit assessment is for the 4000 word essay, which explains
and discusses the contexts and ideas learned in the unit, which are beginning to
underpin your practice.

Preparation
The first step is to identify an area of interest for your Final Major Project. It is most
important at this stage that you choose an area or subject that is relevant to art and/or
design, that is relevant to your own practice and that will sustain your interest. It also
makes sense to choose a subject that is contemporary and one for which there is
adequate information available.
…….
…
You will be required to identify sources of information. This is intended to be a
reassurance both to you and to your supervisor that there is a reasonable expectation of
success in getting the right and relevant information for you to be able to write your
rationale.

The Essay
This essay should present your research that explains and discusses the contexts and
ideas learned in the unit ART002-3, which are beginning to underpin your practice and
set the context for your Final Major Project. Your essay should examine critically the
theoretical, aesthetic, sociological, political, commercial and other influences that will
provide the theoretical underpinning to your Final Major Project. It should not be an
expression of personal opinion, but should be presented as an objective, critical study.
Its precise content, topic, focus and emphasis should be discussed, negotiated and
agreed with your supervisor.
Final Submission
Your final essay should be submitted on Monday the 8th of December 2014. It MUST
be submitted as a .pdf file on the TURNITIN facility on BREO
Please note that assignments must be submitted by stated
deadlines. Work submitted late, without official permission from
