Influence of Culture by the Business of Streaming Music

Unlike the old days when music fans used to buy discs at a higher price only to discard them later after they are outdated, music has taken a new phase today. New services have come up that give music fans an opportunity to listen to music online, either for free or at a little charge per month. The emergence of the new services such as Spotify and YouTube among others that help fans access a variety of music has brought another impact on music content and the culture as a whole.

The major impact has been on young music fans who listen to the online music and spend a lot on subscriptions in order to listen to the music. Young asserts that digital music is not that good while Gene Simmons and Tommy Lee give the opinion thatpop music deteriorates morals (Buskirk, 2012). Even though Buskirk’s article says thatthe business of streaming music will changethe culture to the better, I would be in full support of the views that the digital music will negatively influence culture. The music which has largely targeted the youths is changing their lifestyles by imitating what they see in the music. They also spend a lot on subscriptions and their valuable time listening to music.

The artists are paid according the times their music is listened to online. The earnings depend on the rate at which their music is streamlined. In case the music is clicked by a few people, the payment to the artist is less. Some artists claim that music earnings have gone down, since the major artists’ music is streamed more. However, it is beneficial to the artists since their music will not have to be stored in the shelves after some time.
