Sample Summary:
In his essay A Reunion With Boredom, Charles Simic argues that our unhealthy dependence on technology has disconnected us from the healthy benefits of being bored. This realization comes to him during a several-day power outage as a result of Hurricane Irene, when Simic was left without access to any technological devices. What strikes the author most is the fact that we seek constantly to be occupied and thus have lost touch with the personal reflection that comes from experiencing quieter moments. Simic concludes from all this that it is our devices that control us rather than the other way around.
