During the early 1960s, the book’s main characters are introduced: Odenigbo, who frequently entertained intellectuals in order to discuss the political turmoil that was ongoing in Nigeria;Ugwu, a 13 year old boy from the village who moved in with Odenigbo in order to work as his house servant. Life changed for UgwuasOlanna,Odenigbo’s girlfriend, moved in with them. Olanna had a twin sister, called Kainene. Her lover was Richard,an Englishman who had come to Nigeriato study the arts. The story jumped ahead four years, to the period when trouble was brewing between the Igbo and the Hausa people, an event where hundreds of people died in massacres, including but not limited to Olanna’s beloved uncle and auntie. The Igbo created a new republic, which was called Biafra.
