Chapter 1 : ” Columbus, The Indians, and Human Progress”
A. 1) Zinn talks about the idea of “casualties to progress.” (p.17) Discuss this concept and apply it to the dealings between the Europeans and Indians. Do you agree or disagree with his ideas?
2) According to Zinn, the historian has certain “responsibilities” when writing history. (8-11) Discuss and analyze how and why a historian should approach the writing of any historical event.
Chapter 2 : ” Drawing the Color Line”
1) Many proponents of slavery justified the institution of slavery on the fact that slavery had always occurred in Africa (pg27). How does Zinn deal with this justification. Do you agree is disagree?
2) On pg 23, Zinn writes, ” There is not a country in world history in which racism has been more important. for so long a time, as the United States.” Using evidence from the chapter (laws,treatment,slave rebellions, racial attitudes, etc) comment on the validity of this statement.
