The final assignment must include the following:
a. Introduction (10%)
This introduces the three genera you have chosen. Include information about the natural
distribution of each genus, the number of species each contains.
b. Analysis and description of each genus (20%)
For each genus provide a brief morphological description. For each genera this should be a
synthesis of the two descriptions you have analysed, developed and written by you.
c. Discussion (20%)
Discuss how each genus fits into the family, and how each genus differs from other genera in the
family. Which morphological features are most important for describing that genus, and which
are less critical? Support your arguments with referenced evidence.
d. Images (40%)
For each genus, provide images of each morphological feature that you consider to be critical.
No more than five images for each genus. If you submit more, you will have marks deducted.
Each image must be of a species from the genus being discussed. You may use images from a
number of different species to illustrate each genus. Identify and name each species, using
correct botanical nomenclature.
Label your images with name of photographer (you in most cases), location and date. Each
image should also have a short legend below it stating the name of the species depicted and
describing the important feature the image illustrates. For example,
Figure 1: Corymbia ficifolia, showing urn-shaped capsules. Name, place, date
The majority of images used should be your own. However, you may supplement your images
with fully referenced images sourced from elsewhere.
If you use images that are not your own and do not cite them (reference them) correctly, you
will get 0 marks for that section.
e. Presentation (10%)
The final report should be presented as an A4 sized PDF or MSWord file and include:
• Title – make sure your student number, the name of your family and the word
count is on the title page
• Introduction
• Discussion of your analysis
• Descriptions of each genus
• Images
• Citations in the text and a list of references at the end – presented in the
Harvard style (see Referencing below)
This is a major assignment, marks will be deducted for spelling mistakes,
typographical errors, and lack of attention to formatting.
The word limit is 900 words
