1) King Philip’s War was a violent episode in Wampanoag-Puritan history, lasting from 1675 to 1678. By the end of the conflict, the Wampanoag people had been almost entirely annihilated. Why did the war happen? In what ways did Wampanoags and Puritans justify themselves? For extra points, explain how you think Puritans balanced religion–and their idea of a “City Upon a Hill”–with extreme martial violence. Use primary sources from the chapter to support your responses. (Focus on chapter 2 for this prompt.)
