Exegetical Assignment Instructions
To complete this assignment you must download the LINK
Type your answers into this document and submit it to Blackboard once you have completed it. The instructions below are exactly the same as those found in the document you download above.
Acts 8:1-25 or Acts 10:1-48 (Assignment 6)
Answer the 3 following questions.
1. Paragraph Division: After a thorough reading of your passage, divide it into paragraphs and list the verses numbers that make up the paragraphs in numbered order below. Then in a short sentence describe the main point of each paragraph. Format your answers below accordingly:
1. Joshua 23:1-13 “Obey Covenant and you will keep the land”
2. Joshua 23:14-16 “Disobey the Covenant and you will loose the land and perish.”
2. Observations, Interpretive Questions and Application (You may delete the following instruction once you understand what you are asked to do.)
Observations:
Choose and carefully study one of the scripture passages for this week. Record TEN of the most significant observations. Strive for variety in the “relations” that you observe. For this and succeeding assignments which call for “Observations,” divide your observations as equally as possible between categories 1 through 4 as explained in the document CATEGORIES OF OBSERVATIONS AND INTERPRETIVE QUESTIONS located at “Course Content” > “Week 3” “Week 3: Study.” Record your Observations by:
(1) Category of Observation (2) Observation (“Raw Material & Relationship); (3) Describe the observation and where it occurs (4) copy the biblical text and put in bold those words-phrases in the text that specifically show the relationship (Do not put the entire verse or paragraph in bold). See the example below.
NOTE: Only one “raw material” category and one grammatical/literary relationship per Observation. Listing multiple categories/relationships will cause you to be penalized for those that are incorrect, even if one of the categories/relationships is correct.
Interpretive Questions:
Ask two interpretive questions based on what you believe to be the two most significant Observations in your passage. In this week’s assignment you are asked to answer the interpretive question to the best of your ability with the information you already know. In order to aid in application, ask C, D and E type questions of the text. Do not separate the interpretive questions from their observations. Pair your questions directly with their observations by double-spacing and inserting them directly beneath the two observations. For help in formulating you Interpretive Question, use the document HELPS IN FORMING INTERPRETIVE QUESTIONS document located at “Course Content” > “Week 3” “Week 3: Study.” Title your Interpretive Questions based on its corresponding letter as noted in the “HELPS” document. Do not ask questions which call for a “yes/no” answer.
Application:
This week the reading of Chapter 8 in the Holman Guide discusses the nature of application of a passage according to literal and non-literal method (See pages 57-59). Present an application of your passage based on one of the Interpretive Questions you have asked. For this assignment make your application based on the Literal Applications, either A or B, whichever is needed for your passage. Give an Application that applies to modern day life and include a practical illustration from everyday life.
Record your 10 Observations, 2 Interpretative Questions with answers (C, D, & E type questions should be asked and answered) and 1 Application exactly according to the example below (Note that 8 of your Observations will not include an Interpretative question, 2 of them will. One of your Observations that has Interpretive Question will also include an Application):
Observation 1: Category 1: Historical Contrast – a recurrence of similar but not identical terms, is seen in verses.”
Copy the corresponding biblical text and put in bold the relevant words or phrases that indicate the Observation relationship.
Interpretive Question: (C) “Why did the writer choose to record … in this place?” “It appears from the context of this passage in verses 9-10 than the answer to this question can be is…”
Application: “The application of my passage cannot be literal because it seems to be culturally bound. There is a principle however…”
3. Commentary: Consult a scholarly commentary and read the section on your passage. State whether the author has addressed one of your interpretive questions, and describe their comments in light of your own. Did they agree, disagree, somewhere in between or go a completely different direction than you. Give a one-paragraph description of the how the author addresses one of your interpretive questions. Make sure to document your resource
