Read the goal statement carefully. Stay focused on responding to the questions.
Freewrite. In a freewrite, you are simply writing down your ideas. This is not the place to organize, revise, edit, or proofread.
Look for your best ideas in your freewrite. Here is where you mine your freewrite for the gems. Circle the best ideas and start thinking about how you might organize them around one focused, main idea for the paper.
• Create an outline and organize your thoughts. Your outline should include
o An introduction that grounds your reader in your topic and leads logically to your main idea.
o A body of paragraphs that support your main idea with evidence and examples. Each paragraph should have one idea and that idea should support the main idea of the paper.
o A conclusion that reiterates your main idea.
• Write a draft, following your outline. Consider using your word processing software (e.g. MSWord) to write your draft. This will give you the flexibility to make changes as needed, while you write. You will be able to copy and paste your final draft into the appropriate field in the assessment.
• Compare your draft to your outline.
o If you are not satisfied that you have followed your outline, or if you want to make changes to your draft that will improve on your outline, now is the time to revise your draft. Make those changes.
o When you are satisfied that you have followed your outline and provided all of the information in a logical manner, then it is time to proofread.
