Choose ONE of the below essay topics and write a critical essay.
Choose three Australian films and develop an argument in relation to how they represent ‘Australianness’ or the national character. Consider the peculiarities of how Australian filmmakers have attempted to develop ‘national’ or ‘local’ stories as reflected through cultural themes, characters, use of landscape and cinematic style. If relevant to your argument, discuss how the concept of the national can be problematized in these movies.
Key issues to consider are:
outback landscapes
the binary of bush versus the city
Larrikin character types and representations of masculinity
Representation of national values
Indigenous Australians, culture and relations with settler culture
OR
Choose three films from one non-Hollywood cinema, or alternatively one non-Hollywood director, and develop an argument in relation to cultural representation and visual style. Consider how the films’ narratives, themes and iconography connect with broader discussions of cultural identity, ‘the national’ or national cinema.
