Geotechnical Engneering Academic Essay

Task #1:Shallow foundation (50 marks)
As shown in Figure 1, we are considering a rectangular footing as a shallow
foundation for a new building in Southport. The soil parameters are given here:
! = 16.5kN/m3, !sat = 24kN/m3, c0 = 17kN/m2, and “0 = 25o
Considering the following tasks: [10 mark each]
(a) The loading is applied at Point ”O”. Df=1.0 m, h=0.5 m, B=1.125 m, L=2.0
m, Fs=3.5, ?=30o. Find the allowable gross loading.
(b) Following part (a), if the groundwater table moves up or down, how will it
a?ect the allowable gross loading?
(c) Following part (a), the inclined angles (?) can vary between zero and 90 degrees.
How will this angle a?ect the allowable gross loading?
(d) If the loading is applied at Point ”A” with a distance e=0.2 m, find the allowable
gross loading. Also, find out how ”e” a?ects the loading?
(e) Similar to Part (d), but the loading is applied at Point ”B: with a distance
e=0.2 m, find the allowable gross loading. Also, find out how ”e” a?ects
the loading?
Hint: For part (b)–(e), you need to vary the parameters to cover all ossible range
and make a detailed discussion, if you would like to achieve high grade.
Tsak #2: Earth pressure (50 marks)
A frictionless retaining wall is shown in Figure 2.
The soil parameters are given here:
Soil 1: ! = 16kN/m3, !sat = 21kN/m3, c0=0, “0 = 25o
Soil 2: ! = 18kN/m3, !sat = 25kN/m3, c0=0, “0 = 30o
Cosidering the following tasks:
(a) Determine the Rankine active and passive forces per unit length of the wall
and the location of the resultant for the following conditions: H=10 m,
H1=5 m, q=12 kN/m2, h=2 m. [5 marks]
(b) Following part (a), How does the surcharge (q) a?ect the active and passive
forces acting on the wall? Try to vary the values of q, and plat the relationship
between the surcharge charge loading (q) and the active and passive
forces. [15 marks]
(c) Following part (a), how does the groundwater table level a?ect the active and
passive forces? Try to vary the value of h from h=0 to h ” H1, and plot the
relationship between h and active and passive forces. [15 marks]
(d) Following part (a), if we fix the groundwater table level, How does the thickness
of the upper layer (H1) a?ect the active and passive forces? [15 marks]
