Assignment brief
Students are to complete their final research project of 4000 words.
The final project should:
Be based on a clearly identified social enterprise problematic
Have appropriate research questions
Have a critical analysis of the literature
Have a clear and coherent methodological approach, use appropriate methods of data collection, and clearly present research findings
Contain an analysis and discussion of the findings, referring back to the literature and using the identified theoretical framework
Have clear conclusions and appropriate recommendations
The research project should draw on both the relevant subject literature and methodological texts.
Learning outcomes
1 -Demonstrate a systematic and detailed understanding of key aspects of a real social enterprise issue
2 – Synthesise and evaluate arguments, assumptions, abstract concepts and data (which may be incomplete) to make substantiated judgments

6 – Conduct methodologically sound research using primary and secondary sources of information and effectively apply general research principles

Assessment criteria
The final research project should contain:
Abstract: a brief summary of the purpose, scope and content of the report, including methodology and key conclusions and recommendations.
Table of contents: an accurate log of sections and page numbers, including a list of figures, tables, and appendices.
Introduction: background information and well thought through problematic; a clear purpose and scope for the research, appropriate research questions and methodology, and brief description of the project and its main conclusions.
Literature Review: a critical analysis of the key literature in the field, highlighting the theoretical framework being used in the study.
Methodology: a rigorous and relevant methodological approach, and appropriate data collection methods; recognition of the limitations of the research, ethical issues, as well as any problems encountered and how the research dealt with them.
Findings: Data collected rigorously, and presented clearly; use of charts, tables, graphs, pictures are all relevant ways to present data. Using short quotes from interviews, but all labelled and accurately attributed.
Analysis and discussion: The data collected should be evaluated using the analysis of the literature and the theoretical framework identified. There should be a discussion of the findings, and their significance for i) answering the research questions and ii) addressing the key problematic.
Conclusion: A summary of key arguments, ensuring research objectives are covered; recommendations emerging and areas for future research.
Bibliography: All sources clearly listed in accordance with Ruskin referencing manual.
Appendices: All supplementary information to be included, eg. a copy of a questionnaire or interview schedule, a list of interviewees (anonymised if appropriate), etc. Appendices are not marked.
General Assignment Information
The word length is 4000 words. There is leeway of +/- 10%, but over 10% is penalised (see Ruskin Assessment guidelines for more details)
You must avoid plagiarism. All references must be accurately attributed and listed at the end of the project in a full bibliography using the format set out in the Ruskin referencing manual (and Cite Them Right).
General Assignment details
The presentation should include appropriate references, including attribution of data collected.
Appendices, tables, figures must all be labelled correctly and listed in the contents
The appendices and bibliography are not included in the word count.
Hand in date and instructions
Any extension MUST be agreed in advance in accordance with the mitigating circumstances procedure.
Pass mark and resit arrangements
To obtain a Pass, a minimum of 30% must be obtained in each element of the assessment and an overall module mark of no less than 40%. If this mark is not achieved on first submission, the coursework can be resubmitted once. Marks on resubmission are capped at 40%.
