Fertility and Infertility

Amanda is a 36-year-old patient of the OB/Gyne practice you work with. She has come for her annual exam and reports she and her husband have decide to try to have a baby this year. She is very concerned because she has so many friends that have had trouble getting pregnant.

Amanda has a notebook with her and begins her rapid-fire question session.

She asks-

– What can she do to improve the chances of getting pregnant?

– How long does it take most people to get pregnant?

– How should she and her husband time intercourse to achieve pregnancy?

– How often should they have intercourse?

– What lifestyle issues could interfere with achieving pregnancy?

– Can they time intercourse to have a boy?

– What are the chances of her having fertility issues?

– What are the chances of her husband having fertility issues?

– How should she eat and drink every day? Is fish OK? What about coffee? Is it OK to drink some wine?

– How long should they try to get pregnant before they seek further evaluation?

– Just so she knows what could happen- what kind of tests would have to be done if she was not able to get pregnant?
