Fences

Fences

1. Introduction
Different cultures have different ways in which they perceive and treat women. Most societies undermine the value and roles played by female characters. A typical example includes the inferiority attached to the “Fences” play story affecting women like Rose (Susan). The outline reflects on women, including their roles and expectations, desires and goals as portrayed in the Fences.
2. Body
The section concentrates on the paper parameters such as roles and expectation, and desires and goals revealed by women in the context of Fences by August Wilson. It also identifies how women are agents or victims within the story development.
I. Roles of the women
The writer assigns women in the play story as nurturing individuals at the family-scale. For example, Rose assumes the role of a mother in bringing up Cory and Gabriel as well as serving as a step-mother to Raynell (Susan). Women take responsibility for performing home-oriented chores like cleaning, cooking and caring for the kids. For example, Rose and Lucille undertake cleaning and cooking duties in their families. The same responsibilities apply to Janie, a character in “Their Eyes were watching God”, who faces harassment from her husbands (Alex).
II. Expectations of the women
The patriarchal society expects women to be submissive to their husbands at all time. In essence, women should not try to interrupt male counterparts either at work or any gathering. For example, Troy expects his wife Rose to remain silent as they converse with Bono.
III. Desires of the women
One of the desires portrayed by women is to please their husbands. Even after learning Troy had an affair with Alberta, Rose desired to be calm and nurture Raynell following her mother’s demise during childbirth.
IV. Goals of the women
Despite facing threats from men, women appear to be goal characters in the play story. For example, Lucille sets a goal for Bono, which include purchasing a refrigerator for household purposes. Rose also keeps Troy on toes to complete building the fence, an indication of goal-driven woman.
3. How women are agents or victims in the story
Women in the Fence story are agents of good deeds, but at the same time, they are victims of oppression from their husbands. Rose acts as an agent decent service in bringing up Raynell whose mother faced death after giving birth (Susan). Here, Rose not only reveals maturity but also intends to preserve a good relationship with Troy, who is not faithful in the marriage. Women encounter threats and harassment from their male counterparts a situation that makes them feel inferior in society. Troy restrains Rose to attend home-chores as they chat with Bono in the room. The stories of Raymond Carver highlights the plight of women such as rape, social trauma and murder in the society (Marshall). Janie also faces mistreatment from the second husband who determines the clothes his wife should wear.
4. Conclusion
The analysis depicts women play critical roles in a society like nurturing but still undergo inferiority experiences from male-dominated cultures.
