Scenario

Three 5 year old girls are fighting over a piece of purple construction paper in the art area. They begin to yell and rip the paper out of one another’s hands. The preschool teacher, Janice, walks over and yells, “Stop. The girls continue to yell and fight over the paper. Janice yells “I have had enough”. She rips the paper out of the girls’ hands and throws it away. “If you’re going to be a little brats, nobody gets the purple paper.”

Revised Scenario

Three five year old girls are fighting over a piece of purple construction paper in the art area. I move over to the girls to observe the situation. They begin to yell and rip the paper out of one another’s hands. I say to the girls “there seems to be a problem can I help you?’ The girls continue to yell and fight over the paper. I use an assertive voice and say to the girls “I need you to give the papers to me”. I say to the girls “there seems to be a problem with the piece of purple paper”. I then ask each on to tell me what they think the problem is.
