Mackenzie, R.N. (2012). Language, self and business ethics. Journal of Markets and Morality, 3 (1): 22-42.
This article by Mackenzie expresses the importance of good language in a business world. The problem of language has featured much in business world today, with people using a language that harms other people. What is wrong with businesses today in the use of language is the manner in which people have used it to pin down other in the business setting. There have been cases of employees versus employees in the use of bad language in the institutions. Some staffs too have employed bad language while communicating to customers. In some instances too, senior employees have used very derogatory language when expressing themselves to junior employees.
The nature of language in the way it has been expressed I businesses has contributed towards unethical behavior. Non-verbal expressions by staffs towards customers have served only to send them away. Some bosses have chaired meetings with an expression of body language that has only served to create a barrier between them and their employees. This derogatory use of language has several negative effects in the business. Firstly, there is lack of trust between the people working in the same organization. Secondly, customers lose confidence with the organization. The numbers of customers thus reduce, and sales reduce. Thirdly, the communication links between the management and the employees are cut. Cutting of the communication links means that there is strained flow of information. Due to this, organizational performance is strained. The defect in the communication system is then extended to the salient stakeholders. When links with them become loose, the business is on the losing end.
