This exam consists of one 800-word essay (you can write more if you want). Your essay should contain a clear thesis statement (you must italicize your thesis statement), a body, and conclusion. Your essay should be a sophisticated and in-depth analysis of the topic below. Your paper should be well organized, free of typos and/or grammatical mistakes. Note, this is a theoretical essay and is NOT an opinion piece. Your tone should be professional and academic.

You should also paraphrase and cite all references in ASA style (see ASA style guide for reference) and include a works cited page. Be sure to also include the word count. Your essay should be double-spaced, 12-point, Times New Roman font. Also, you are only allowed to draw upon course materials and readings in your essay. Absolutely no outside sources are allowed.

Finally, your essay should be uploaded to dropbox in a single word file in one of the following formats: .doc, .docx, or .pdf. Do not use .pages format. See the associated rubric for more information on how you will be assessed on this assignment.

FINAL ESSAY – CRITICAL ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE AND CLIMATE CHANGE

In this 800-word essay, you should provide an in-depth examination of climate change using Pellow’s framework of Critical Environmental Justice. Your paper should have a main argument (thesis), an intro, body, and conclusion. Your essay should thoughtfully apply Pellow’s concept of Critical Environmental Justice (CEJ) to further our understanding of the social causes and consequences of climate change. Any references to information on climate change must come from materials from this course only (no outside sources, or websites, are acceptable).

The purpose of this essay is to apply Critical Environmental Justice studies to examine the origins, implications and consequences of climate change. Drawing primarily on Pellow’s book: What is Critical Environmental Justice?, first provide an in-depth theoretical overview of the Critical Environmental Justice framework by discussing the major insights of Pellow’s framework. Next, apply the CEJ framework in order to analyze the topic of climate change using a multiscalar analysis. Finally, drawing on the CEJ framework, develop your own a set of recommendations in order to address the complex issue of climate change.

Questions to consider when formulating your paper: How does Critical Environmental Justice differ from more mainstream approaches in combatting climate change. What are the root social causes of climate change? How does power and inequality shape the issue of climate change? What are critical solutions to tackling climate change and what are the implications for our economic system, the role of the state, etc.?

Important: Your essay must explicitly draw upon all of the following materials to support your analysis (the readings of: Pellow’s book: What is Critical Environmental Justice? (Pellow ‘s book should receive most of your attention). However, you must also explicitly reference Klein’s chapter 2: “Hot Money” and Magdoff and Bellamy Foster’s article “An Ecological Revolution”;
