3.1 Explain the key features of a computer-aided design system 5
3.2 Use computer aided design software to produce a design drawing or scheme 6
3.3 Evaluate software that can assist the design process 7
LO 2.1 Produce an analysis of possible design solutions
Select one from the following list of possible products that your company will look to develop.
1/ Portable speaker that can attach to a smart phone (make and model of the smart phone is at your discretion)
2/ Universal TV remote control aimed at elderly people with large buttons and multiple
functions.
3/ A games console stand that has flashing LED lights and specifically positioned cooling fans.
4/ Develop a fully recyclable and sustainable chair for a computer operator which is
ergonomically designed and aesthetically modern.
Once the product has been selected, you are to analyse the market to determine a range of preliminary design solutions – this will include detailed research, design sketches, feasible solutions, as well as a detailed specification clearly stating the key measurables.
LO 2.2 Produce and evaluate conceptual designs
From the research and development carried out in LO2.1you will need to develop a range of detailed conceptual designs, which use a range of CAD systems (e.g. Autocad, solidworks)
You manager has requested a short report where you have used several ways of evaluating the conceptual designs to justify their validity.
LO 2.3 Select the optimum design solution
Using a range of objective techniques, you have been tasked with the selection of the most suitable design that can be developed further into a workable solution.
LO 2.4 Carry out a compliance check
For the final design ensure that the product meets the expectations of the end user and the measurable parameters that were stated in LO 2.1
LO 2.5 Produce final design Report
Produce a report outlining any assumptions you have made. Include all the stages of the development process and your justifications as to how the developed design meets the requirements of the end user and the company’s goal.
LO 3.1 Explain the key features of a computer-aided design system.
Your manager has decided to expand the design department’s capabilities to include advanced simulation techniques, which include the following:-
Finite element analysis (FEA), Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) Casting simulation, animation of mechanisms and assemblies as well as 3D solid and surface models.
The current systems of hardware will not have the capability to run these programmes therefore, you have been assigned to research all aspects of a suitable system that would meet the requirements and identify the associated costs.
LO 3.2 Use computer aided design software to produce a design drawing or scheme.
For the product selected in LO 2.2, produce a range of CAD detailed drawings in 2D & 3D that are to industry standard.
LO3.3 Evaluate software that can assist the design process
Identify and evaluate a range of engineering software that is currently used within the design industry, to aid in the design, testing and manufacture of product.
