Effects of Social Media on People’s Real Lives

The use of social media has influenced a lot of people in today’s generation. People use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms have made people spend a lot of time presenting their ideal selves, other than whom they really are. As a result, their real lives are overshadowed by the social media, something that happens unconsciously. The effects of social media in people’s lives can be short-lived or long-lasting, depending on the frequency of use. In this topic, I expect to analyze how social media affects people’s relationships, self-esteem and their time.

Despite the social media assisting family and friends to communicate more frequently, the quality of communication is weak compared to face-to-face communication. The relationship that should exist between families and friends is not the one of just communicating online; it should be the one of having a heart-to-heart talk. Most people do not have time for quality relationships since they spend most of their time communicating with friends on social media, some of which are unknown physically, or transacting business online.

Together with many other undesirable effects, there is a call to control our use of social media since it can change our true self.
