British rule was extensive in Florida. There were two separate colonies: East Florida, with a capital at St. Augustine, and West Florida, with a capital at Pensacola. During the American Revolution these two colonies remained loyal to the British Crown.
Under British rule Florida had a variegated population. One famous Englishman migrated from the north and lived in Pensacola. You will discover this is in your readings. Creek Indians moved south to Alachua and other areas in Florida, where scattered Christians tribes had previously lived. The British called these Native Americans “Seminoles” after the Creek word for “wild ones” or “separatists”.
In 1781, Spain recaptured West Florida. Two years later East Florida was returned to Spain. Spain’s second occupancy of Florida would not withstand the ambitions of the infant United States of America.
In your readings this week, Spain exited Florida on February 22, 1819, via a treaty with the United States. Florida then received their first U.S. governor and the beginning of the “Americanization of Florida”.
