IMPORTANT POINTS FOR MIDTERM As a note, the order of the diagnostic criteria in the DSM-5 do have significance. Criteria A, for example, is thought to be more important and more common than Criteria B. It speaks to the point that a person might be correctly given a diagnosis even if they dont exactly fit all the criteria.
o Because the order of the criteria are important, go through the criteria, in order, and explain how the client does or does not meet the criteria. If they meet Criteria A, state why, and then go on to Criteria B. If the client does not meet Criteria B, tell me why, and then stop, and go to another diagnosis. It makes no sense to examine Criteria C if the client doesnt meet Criteria B. Explain why a client meets a specific Criteria.
Explain to me why a specific Criteria is not met e.g. Criteria X not met because there is no evidence of anxiety.1. In no more than one page, list the signs and symptoms of the client (10 points)a. Please use bullet points to list signs and symptoms
b. When appropriate, include as evidenced by..(a behavioral description)2. In no more than three pages, list three differential diagnoses and discuss the reasons you ruled them out. (25 points) Choose a potential diagnosis based on a listed sign or symptom. Otherwise, any diagnosis in the DSM is a theoretical possibility. In the justification, go through the criteria, in order, and explain/give an example of how the client meets each one.
o When you reach the criteria that the client does NOT meet, explain why (it may be there is no evidence that or There is no mention of)
EXAMPLE 1The first diagnosis that was explored was Adjustment Disorder, with depressed mood 309.0 (F43.21). This client indicates that although she has experienced many of her symptoms since she was a child the event of her boyfriend moving in with her has exacerbated her symptoms and she believes this event has made her life fall apart. This diagnosis requires the symptoms be present in response to an event occurring within the past three months. However, the client indicates that her boyfriend moved in within six months ago, which signifies the first indicator to rule out this diagnosis. The second criterion that rules out Adjustment Disorder, with depressed mood is the notion that if the stressor is terminated the symptoms will not persist with the client. Due to the clients subjective reports it appears the majority of her symptoms have been present prior to the stressors occurrence. Therefore, this differential diagnosis has been ruled out.
3. Give a complete DSM-5 diagnosis. (30%)a. Give the complete DSM-5 Code Number
b. Give the complete ICD-10 Code Number
c. Write out the complete diagnosis4. In no more than three pages, justify your final diagnosis. (35 points)
Even if you get the correct diagnosis and full points for the previous section, it is possible not to get full points for this section.
Again, go through the criteria, in order, and explain/give an example of how the client meets each one.
