WEX 5 (50 points, 4-5 paragraphs). Developing a thesis question by finding patterns in the novel.
Review WEX 4, and choose the topic you would most like to write about. Then complete the exercise below:
Patterns in a work of fiction are like ?threads in a tapestry? that give color, definition and thematic cohesion to the fabric of the novel. As patterns, they should not be thought of as independent entities, but a part of a complex, thematic whole. These patterns typically involve:
? Passages that convey another level of meaning.
? Dissimilarities (contrasts or oppositions) between characters, situations, or events.
? Similarities (comparisons or repetitions) between characters, situations, or events.
? The thoughts and reflections of the narrator where the narrative voice is strong.
? Passages where a metaphor/simile, image/description, or irony conveys another level of meaning.
Focusing on your chosen topic from WEX 4, incorporate specific examples and details from the work when completing the exercises below.
1. Focus on a scene or passage that conveys another level of meaning and use it to explore/extend your thinking. How does it complicate, contradict, or deepen your interpretation?
2. Focus on two characters, situations, or events that are similar, or which provide contrast to one another. How do they complicate, contradict or deepen your interpretation?
3. Focus on a significant passage where the narrative voice is strong and describe how it complicates, contradicts, or deepens your interpretation.
4. OR, (instead of 3), focus on a passage where a metaphor/simile, image/description, or irony conveys another level of meaning. How does it complicate, contradict or deepen your interpretation?
5. Ruminate on how your thinking has changed, including specific questions to be explored in the paper. Then write a thesis question that will be explored and answered in your paper.
