This piece of writing will evaluate a curriculum vitae and a cover letter used for the application for a position of a marketing intern in Mattel. These materials were meant to be written in a way to assure the applicant of getting the job.
Research, Sector, Company, and Role Evaluation
The CV shows fair research on the company and its motto. The role the company advertised is that of a marketing intern with the responsibilities of supporting the principal cast in the operations of the company. However, the requirement of the company is based on marketing. All the roles that have been mentioned have marketing attached to it. This means that although the company wants an employee who is qualified in business analysis and management, a person who has marketing qualification is in a good position of getting the job. The CV should have included in its writing the marketing as one of the courses the job applicant has undertaken in the studies. The research on the overall doll sector is not impressive. The toy business needs a jovial person whose interaction with the children is top notch. The CV portrays someone who is very serious. Moreover, it does not give any indication of any interaction of the job applicant with children (Rouse, 2004).
Evidence of a bit of interaction with children is important since the position involves marketing of the toys, which entails meeting the kids who are the main market for the business. On another note, the company needs an innovative person or in their words, “We endeavor to build an atmosphere that promotes creativeness and endowment.” The CV does not demonstrate that the job seeker is a creative person. The job experiences presented in the CV are of normal jobs that do not need any creativity. For instance, the job at the bookstore just entails selling of books. There is no creative activity since the only people to interact with are those that come into the bookstore. The CV should contain information that convinces the employer that the job seeker is creative courtesy of the jobs he has done before. Unlike the CV, the covering letter shows more research on the job. It entails applying for the job as a marketing intern and cites the experience of the applicant in the field (Branch & Burn, 2007).
Although the CV has tried to mention that the job seeker has done some research, a good CV would have suggested that the person has done research related to the role that the company requires the employee to play. The CV would have also performed better if it had mentioned research on the doll sector as well as its market. The fact that these things were not mentioned means extensive studies on related fields were not conducted before the CV was drafted. A good research on the topic in question enables one to come up with a formidable CV that is capable of securing a job for its drafter.
The CV did fairly well in this segment. Adjustments and more improvements are needed given that research is the basis of the CV. Any CV written without a better comprehension and understanding of the role, the market, and the entire industry is bound to fail. Therefore, before one sets out in writing a CV, one should do extensive research on the subject of the job (OWL, 2013).
Match to the Role
The job needs much commitment since it entails supporting several other roles in the company. The job also requires creativity because it includes marketing as one of its key responsibilities. The CV gives evidence of a hard working job seeker who can withstand the pressure. The experiences working as a waiter requires much concentration and humility. This job requires hard work and as such, a clear mind is needed. The CV demonstrates that the person can do the required job in a satisfactory manner. The applicant’s organizational prowess is an added advantage because the job requires the applicant to assist the brand manager in performing its role. Moreover, the ability to adapt to new situations is amazing and can help in improving the chances of getting the job. This comes handy given that changes always occur in this trade. The CV also profiles the fact that the job seeker is a good communicator. It goes as far as mentioning the prowess in translating between English and Mandarin. The position requires these attributes. In addition, the academic standard mentioned in the CV is a second year of study. Since the job requires an intern, the writer of the CV got it right. Moreover, the applicant’s good history with figures courtesy of a good grade in mathematics suits the job since it requires somebody who is good with numbers (Rossi et al., 2004).
Despite the fact that the CV got it right on various fronts regarding the suitability to the job, it does not cite the important components. The job requires somebody who has strong co-ordination abilities. The CV does not give any indication that the person applying the job is equipped with such abilities. In addition, the job needs a person who is computer literate to the extent of knowing how to work with the internet. This requirement is not catered for in the CV. Moreover, the applicant is not experienced in any marketing department, according to the CV. This will definitely rule out the applicant from any consideration for the job (CV Writing, 2012). The cover letter on its part has summarized the achievements of the applicant as required. It goes as far as mentioning the availability of the candidate’s testimonials and referees. This is a good sign to the management and it gives them a go ahead to further review the application (Rouse, 2009).
Development Targets
Every company strives to grow in stature in its operations. This growth is brought about by the work of the employees. The human resource department, therefore, has the task of employing an ambitious workforce. The CV does not give any evidence of ambition of the job seeker. The ambitions of a job seeker are represented by professional and personal objectives part of the CV. The CV is poorly written in this front. The omission of this part of the CV is clear evidence that the applicant has no ambitions. Mattel believes in professional growth for both the company and its employees: a belief that is rooted in the company’s vision. Lack of ambition means that the company will not be willing to hire such a worker since it does not conform to its vision. Nobody lacks future objectives and plans, the writer of the CV chose to leave these details. The basic format for any CV should include the objectives and the realistic ambitions that one is planning to achieve (Branch & Burn, 2007).
This part of the CV gives the employer an idea of the degree of passion that the worker has. Passion for certain thing makes that thing easy to execute, and often the outcome of the activity is presentable. The lack of it means the converse and the result of that work is undesirable. The company is inclined to hire a passionate worker and is willing to achieve more through a change of attitude. The CV is a complete failure if the assessment were to be based on this part only. It, therefore, needs a rewriting (OWL, 2013).
The cover letter got it right in most parts. For instance, personal information is well documented. The letter also demonstrates the knowledge of the data about the company and the position. Moreover, the letter gives the qualifications of the applicant; however, the information should be given in short prose. The letter has given too much information that will make the letter boring. In a nutshell, the letter needs some work since it is well written. Nonetheless, it would work well in introducing the job applicant (OWL, 2013).
Overall, the CV would get a low mark of say 40-49 that is to say there is some evidence of research on the company, the industry and the requirements, although these studies were not necessarily based on the issues at hand. The evaluation of these findings was done poorly, which led to the drafting of a CV that would perform poorly. The information on the CV tried to match the applicant’s experiences with the role offered. It also some awareness of the experience gaps in the company. The CV performed poorly in the last section. Indeed, it would make the applicant lose the job. On the other hand, the cover letter did very well in its evaluation (Rossi et al., 2004).
In conclusion, the CV needs some work for it to be considered a serious job application. More research the jobs’ setting should be done. The study will help in gauging the requirements of the job, the department, and even the sector. The required outline of a CV should also be used when drafting the next CV in order to attract the attention of the employers. In contrast, the cover letter has been written well. Most of its parts have been drafted well (Rouse, 2009).
