Those in management and leadership positions in education and care services must demonstrate
leadership in a range of areas in order to ensure the effective operation of their services and the
delivery of a quality service to their clients.
This assignment requires you to write an essay in which you critically analyse management and
leadership capacity in the provision of quality early education and care services.

ASSIGNMENT 2 DETAILS
This assignment requires you to write an essay in which you critically analyse management and
leadership capacity in the provision of quality early education and care services.
Students will choose one topic from the list below and write an essay that critically anlayses
the capabilities required of the manager in providing leadership in that area to ensure quality
service operation.
Topics – (choose 1)
i) Communication – including processes for giving and receiving information
and ideas, supervision of staff and conflict resolution,
ii) Culture and climate – transmission of values, beliefs, standards and
expectations including consideration of whether an authoritarian,
democratic or collegial approach is most effective,
iii) Administration in the setting – including maintaining records,
maintaining and developing the facility, developing rosters and
timetables, understanding of legal and industrial issues,
iv) Staff motivation and teamwork – including theories of motivation,
inclusion in decision making, developing a team.
In order to complete this assignment you need to:
Identify from research and literature the elements that contribute to quality service provision.
o Your texts each have a section on quality. Use these to help you here.
Choose 1 topic area from the list above.
Review the research and literature relevant to the focus topic.
o Look beyond the literature focussed on schools and early childhood settings.
o Introduce the topic area and discuss why it is important.
Summarise important principles, issues, ideas and / or strategies to be considered in relation to
the topic.
Identify any legal or industrial considerations that may impact the topic area.
Examine theoretical models or frameworks relevant to the topic area.
Draw on theory to generate principles and strategies that the manager could use to provide
leadership in that area to ensure quality service delivery.
Assessment criteria:
Articulates the elements that contribute to quality service provision.
Introduces the chosen topic and identifies key elements of the topic area.
Examines theory or frameworks related to the topic.
Applies theories and /or principles to outline leadership strategies to ensure quality
service delivery.
Presents work professionally, with clear academic writing and within the word limit and
uses APA referencing style correctly, including competently integrating evidence.

Well-developed discussion showing developing ability to compare and contrast different approaches to the topic area. Supports discussion effectively using 8-10 references.
3 Compares and contrasts theories and frameworks relevant to the area. Brief analysis of theories which may be relevant in education and care services. Supports discussion using 3-4 references.
4 Understanding of the role of leadership in the delivery of quality in the topic area. Developing ability to link theory and principles to the development of appropriate strategies. Support work with 4-6 references.
5 Clear and concise structure; strengthened by relevant research; grammar and syntax mostly correct; cohesive text within word/time length; discriminating use of appropriate vocabulary; few typographic or spelling errors. Consistently accurate APA referencing; competent integration of evidence, low percentage for Turnitin; original work with insignificant matches.
