critical analysis

critical analysis

Paper instructions:
Short Critical Paper: the short critical paper is to be a minimum of three COMPLETE pages to five typed pages long, and double-spaced. This paper is to represent a critical evaluation of a work in the arts that is experienced directly, live, and in a way that maximizes the experience (in a real museum or gallery, live dance, live music, live theatre, live experimental/ interdisciplinary work, etc.). This experience must occur during this Spring semester, and not be a critique of something that you attended prior to August 27 2013. A work that is viewed on the Internet is not acceptable. Also, if an art exhibition is chosen, do not write on the entire exhibition, except to introduce the general thematic nature of the show in which the work appears. Instead, focus upon one or, at most, two works in the show to assure a more in depth consideration of the work in your critical analysis. Since many films are highly commercial and superficial, and there is not enough time to evaluate them all, please do not evaluate films, or live comedy.

Both the quality of writing and a clear use of critical thinking will be stressed when grading the critical paper. The paper must critically discuss and evaluate one or two works, and must address the (1) theme or content of the expression(s) (that is, what does the work say or communicate to you?); (2) the form of the piece(s) (that is, how the work is organized or composed); and (3) the context in which the work was presented (where and how the work was presented) and how this affected your experience of the piece. Also, if appropriate to the particular work, you might address (4) the artist’s intentions (or the critical views of others, such as curators or critics, toward the work if these are available),
