Crime through Computers

Need computing devices within the investigations. Today with computer software and hardware becoming more portable and sophisticated along with wireless technology broadens the description of computer related crime, however for this research the main emphasis will be on the role of the computer in solving general crime.Over time how people understand computer forensic has varied mainly in terms of researchers and topics. In relation to computer forensics one commonly used description is that it is the analysis, attainment and reporting of data mainly got at the scene of a crime, which pertains to a criminal or civil inquiry. The relevance of the computer forensic department is currently increasing. This importance is attributed to the sophisticated ways that crime has evolved; the upward trends of crime are however hard to control, the implementation of the new technologies in the cases offers un-parallel help to the law enforcement agencies and officers during the investigations.

In solving cybercrimes, computer forensics is often effectively used however; its implementation extends far beyond these borders. As many criminals engage in more serious crimes such as sexual assault, murder, and terrorism, reconstructing the crime scene and DNA analysis with the forensic analysis technology often provides law enforcement crucial discoveries often overlooked during the initial analysis of the investigation. In addition, there are various real-life crimes that were solved through the use of computer forensic, and the importance of the computer forensic continues to develop as technology evolves. However, computer evidence does not always offer concrete facts enough to convict a crime mainly due to the virtual and volatile nature of data storage. To establish credible computer evidence it is essential properly to process the computer evidence collected from other peripherals, and it is the job of the computer forensic experts to guarantee that the evidence is uncorrupted, valid and unquestionable. In an overview, law enforcers can use computers to monitor criminals mainly through social media, intelligence monitoring agencies, computer seizures, cyber forensics and other forms to close a criminal case. The Washington, green river killer in the 1980s till early 1990s is one such case where computer forensics helped in the case. An approximate 90 victims are thought to have been killed by the GRK commonly known as Gary Ridgeway. He mostly attacked prostitutes and had a history of abusing them dating back to 1983. However even after collecting DNA samples from the suspect, they still could not prove he committed the murders. DNA technology in 2001 helped convict the suspect who later came to confess to all 48 murder charges in exchange for not facing the electric death penalty. He currently serves 48 life charges without parole.

With the above example and many such cases, criminals should realize that as much as they think they are getting smarter, with the way they operate. The law enforcers are doing the same thing as already shown by the many convicted cases, and so the fact remains that as much as they cover their trails some evidence will always remain that will evidently trace back to them.
