Paper instructions:
Think back over your first experience in doing ethnographic fieldwork a week ago. Now, go back into the field, either to the same place or places you went the first time, or try a different setting. Focus on one aspect of culture–language. Listen to what people are saying and, especially, how they are communicating. Consider some of the topics you’ve read about in Chapter 5–dialects, style shifting, honorifics, gendered speech, speech stratification, focal vocabularies, kinesics, etc. I don’t expect you to cover all of these in one short session of field work, but practice using your hearing as well as your vision as a part of your ethnographic data gathering.
Report your observations via the class Moodle just as you did for Exercise # 1
