1.
Look at the sources below. They give information about Global Warming. Most
scientists say that Global Warming is caused by an increase in greenhouse gases,
including carbon dioxide.

QUESTIONS
(
a
) Using
all
the sources, give examples of the environmental changes which are
taking place in the world as a result of global warming.
(
b
) Using the sources, describe some of the social
and
economic effects of global
warming on people.
(
c
) From your own knowledge, describe some of the actions which could be taken
to overcome the problem of global warming. You could refer to possible
actions by:
(i) individual people,
(ii) national governments,
(iii) international organisations.
(
d
) Source E mentions the possibility of future changes in farming.
From your own knowledge, describe the main changes
which have taken
place
in Scottish farming over the last 50 years.

Scientists and economists are warning of the major effects climate change
will have on people. Large areas of south-east England, including London,
will be at risk from flooding. People may have to move from these areas.
Rather than spend money on central heating, we may need to install air
conditioning in our homes. Farmers will have to change their farming
methods. Glasshouses might no longer be needed for growing crops like
tomatoes. Countries such as Greece may become too hot and dry for vines,
but England may become a major wine producer. Our eating habits may
change to a more Mediterranean diet based on pasta, olives and vegetables.
As a result, we may become a healthier nation, saving the Health Service
money. We might be able to grow grapes in Galloway, but we will also
have to spend a lot more money on repairing flood damage.
