Consumer decision making
Among the goals of the proposed Victorian Mental Health Act reforms are: to embed recovery oriented practices encompassing the principles of self-determination and to implement supported decision making. Drawing from the published literature, Compare the principles and concepts underpinning three different approaches to individual decision-making in health care: surrogate decision-making processes for physical health; surrogate decision-making processes for consumers under the current Mental Health Act and supported decision-making. Discuss the implications of each approach for consumer self-determination and for relationships between consumers and health care practitioners.
