In Chapter 4, pp. 111-112 and 116, there is discussion of the rise of the city-state of Sparta and its very militaristic social organization, and then a discussion of the ancient Olympics. The Olympics were apparently an all-male event, but there were many other local and regional Greek festivals involving athletic contests.
