1) State an original thesis statement in the ing paragraph. The thesis should state your argument and thus your opinion should be evident to the reader.

2) Include ideas you intend to develop in your essay in the ing paragraph.

3) Develop each of these stated ideas in a separate paragraph. Remember each paragraph needs a clear topic sentence that relates directly back to the thesis statement.

4) Effectiveness of the overall argument. Does the essay present an effective argument? Address the counterarguments? Use logical and relevant examples?

5) Tone: The tone of the essay should be as reasonable, trustworthy, and sincere. Don’t attack, persuade.

6) Concluding paragraph should restate or sum up your argument effectively.

7) Present reasonable evidence to support your argument. Refer to outside sources to build your credibility. When using a direct quote, use MLA.

a. Include a Works Cited page.

8) This essay should be 3-5 pages in length. If you have more or less than, points will be taken off.

9) Check your punctuation, grammar, etc. Use spell check and read over your work to alleviate any simple errors!
