Canada Before ConfederationAssignment # 2
In the decade 1835-45 when the debates over political reform and responsible government were taking on new intensity in British North America, which one of the three possible positions would you have chosen to support: the Family Compact or Tory position, the radical Mackenzie-Papineau position, or the moderate one of Baldwin, Lafontaine and Howe?
Using the information in the relevant chapters of The Peoples of Canada: A Pre-Confederation History (Oxford University Press) explain why people of the time could have reasonably supported each of the three positions and how you justify your choice. Reference to some of the primary documents in A few acres of snow-Documents in pre-confederation Canadian History, would also strengthen your argument. Be prepared to discuss this in class.
