Born Digital Directed Response

Born Digital Directed Response

If you were born before 1994, you are not a true Digital Native, rather you are a Digital Settler. If you are between 18 and 25, you are a blend of Digital Native and Digital Settler. You were most likely not born into a house with a high speed internet, but you have probably spent more time in the Digital World than outside it that makes you sort of a long time Digital Resident. You will most likely spend the rest of your life immersed in the Digital World. Choose one major concept from this book and discuss how it may change, inform or relate to your future behavior as a Digital Resident.

Use the steps in the Process Model to isolate the central issue or issues in your essay. [See either the Process text or the Introduction to the Process Video. e.g. Is there a need that is currently going unmet? Will it demand a new medium? Does current usage [how we use digital technology] create legal issues? Are there dominant shifts in the Marketplace, mergers etc? Is there a new creative force a Steve Jobs or Bill Gates disrupting the digital world? You may use whichever pieces of the model are relevant, but you must place your discussion within the model. Also, support your essay with at least two illustrative, and specific examples that have occurred since the beginning of the year.

Format Requirements: The file you upload for this exercise, and all other files uploaded for the course, must be in either of the two common Microsoft Word formats .doc or .docx. If Word is not available to you, you may also submit file in the .rtf file format [rich text format]. Microsoft Works files, .wps and Pages files, are specifically prohibited as they often do not upload to Moodle in a usable form. Uploading from mobile devices, smart phones and tablet computers, is also discouraged because of past uploading problems. The exercise file should be named using the following convention: LastnameAssignmentName.doc. So if your name is Smith and the Assignment is the Born Digital Response Exercise you would name and upload this file: SmithBornDigitalResponseExercise.doc

Mandatory Reminder: All assignments must be completed in order to pass the course. If ANY assignment is not turned within 5 days of the due date, an F will be assigned as the final course grade regardless of grades accumulated for other assignments.

Late Paper Policy: This policy applies to all assignments in the course. An assignment is considered late immediately after the due date and time. Late assignments will normally be designated as completed, and an F will be entered as the grade. Hence a late assignment that is determined to be late for reasons beyond the student’s control will not necessarily result in a student failing the course. Late assignments may be accepted for grading if there are exceptional circumstances that resulted in the late submission. Late assignments accepted for grading are subject to a penalty of one letter grade per late day. So, if an assignment is due on Monday at 10:00 pm, it becomes one day late at Monday at 10:00:01 pm. On Tuesday at 10:00:01 pm it becomes 2 days late. A late paper accepted for grading due to exceptional circumstances beyond the student’s control will be graded as if it had been turned in on time and then a full letter grade would be deducted for each late day. This can obviously still result in a failing grade if a papers is four or more four days late.

Length Requirement: This response has a minimum requirement of 600 words, 350 of which must be your original words. That means don’t just string quotations together. You should target a maximum number of words at 1250. We both know what the text said, I am interested in what you think about it. You may use more than 1250 words if you really need to, but try to be precise. Obviously, the citations on your Work Cited page do not count in the length requirement. Direct quotes within the paper do count in the length requirement.[In line Citations do NOT count as part of the document. For example: (Field, 2005). or (Field, 2005, p. 14) do not count as words in the length of your essay.

Citation Requirement: As with all essays you may use the citation style that is used in the professional journals in your discipline. For those of you in the hard sciences that means journal style, not lab notes style. If you are undecided about your future plans, the Citation Builder at the NCSU Library site is very helpful in putting your citations into either APA or MLA style. Your citations should appear at the end of your essay on a separate page entitled References or Works Cited. The contents of that page do not count toward any length requirements.

For this assignment you will obviously cite the relevant portions of The Process and Born Digital, the parts that you are quoting or paraphrasing. Make sure that you do not simply cite the book. Rather you would cite the specific page or pages relevant to your essay. To cite the video lectures use the following form. Say you wanted to cite the lecture listed on the syllabus as The Process Model: The Details are in the Transitions. Part 1. The citation would look like this:

Schrag, Robert L. The Process Model: The Details are in the Transitions. Part 1. North Carolina State University, Raleigh. 2014. Video lecture.
