Athletic Department Strategic Plan

Athletic Department Strategic Plan

Instructions: This paper incorporates the core concepts learned in this course and affords students the opportunity to effectively communicate their analysis of, and proposal for an organization to senior managers.

Students will create a strategic plan for the athletic department at an NCAA Division II institution, Krakus University. The plan will be based on the information created in the first three assignments and adding any other necessary components. Krakus has been accepted as a provisional member of NCAA Division II. As part of the process, the athletic department needs to create a five-year strategic plan.

The strategic plan needs to incorporate any corrections/revisions and recommendations given as part of the feedback for each of the three previous assignments. One of the main purposes of this assignment involves the students’ ability to analyze, synthesize, and construct finalized recommendations for the future operations, management, leadership, structure, and organizational approach for this scenario.

Create a detailed and organized plan, which will be submitted to the president and board of trustees for review. Feel free to use charts, tables, and/or diagrams.

The main purpose of the Strategic Plan in the Final Project is for students to demonstrate their ability to plan effectively and create strategies for successful organizational performance

Additionally, treat this Strategic Plan as the detailed guide for your organization (college athletic department) to meet specific goals, objectives, and strategies to be successful long-term.

Example Strategic Plan Outline:
€¢ Vision Statement: Concentrates on what is going to be accomplished, major responsibilities involved of staff/organization, target audience involved, and future growth strategies.
€¢ Mission and Core Values: Define the mission and core values of the organization now and describe improvements since submitting the Managerial Leadership assignment in week two.
€¢ Analysis of the Environment: Describe the industry associated with a scenario selected. Describe the size of the market involved in the potential growth rate of the industry. Describe competitive advantages associated with your organization in the industry. Assess and analyze SWOT’s involved with your organization and meeting your goals through this Strategic Plan.
€¢ Goals & Objectives: Determine what goals and objectives. Your organization is trying to meet. Determine what you are trying to accomplish in clear and descriptive language.
€¢ Corporate-Level Strategy: Demonstrate growth and stability strategies for the organization. For example, how can the minor league baseball team develop a more diverse and larger target audience? How can the collegiate athletic department develop more boosters and community support?
€¢ Competitive Strategies: What sets your organization apart from others? How can you compete in this market place to generate the necessary revenue and compete both financially and through athletics?
€¢ Functional-Level Strategies: Describe s specific marketing functions (through the 4 P’s of marketing). What marketing strategies are going to lead the organization to success? Determine the type of functions associated with a quality human resources Department to recruit, select, train, and assess staff. Determine financial functions which demonstrate how revenue will be generated, maximized, and budgeted appropriately.

Keys to creating the Strategic Plan:
€¢ Create a quality mission and vision statement (improve on work from previous submissions).
€¢ Provide specific goals for long-term success.
€¢ Be specific and detailed with all writing.
€¢ Explain how objectives and strategies are going to be accomplished.
€¢ Research examples of Strategic Planning on the Internet (through businesses and sports organizations).
€¢ Strategic planning should demonstrate alignment between mission, vision, objectives, and goals.
€¢ Be creative and do not feel like you have to follow a specific outline or guide for developing your strategic plan. Instead, review examples and information provided to develop your own version of a Strategic Plan which demonstrates how you are going to be successful in the consulting scenario selected.
