This individually created and original project will utilize the critical processes, your aesthetic perception and capability to identify artistic movements about given aesthetic styles to particular cultures, time-periods and developments. As part of this project you will illustrate the universality of artistic creation by comparatively presenting conceptual characteristics of different styles, which are major representatives that express seminal works for specific eras and regions. You will also explore and identify specific artistic movements as extensions of political, socioeconomic and cultural climates through the analysis of specific artists’ lives, works, society and culture. Additionally, you will connect your selected topic to a contemporary (20th and 21st century) use or influence of the styles, methods, ideals, motivations and or context of the particular art works or artifacts you choose to examine.

Your final project will be an original work that compares two significant pieces of work (architecture, sculpture, pictorial arts, craft arts and/or design arts) from the roughly the same period of time (within approximately 500 years) but from two different regions of the world. The pieces you choose to examine should express the same or similar thematic or contextual information within the culture of origin.

-9-10 pages, not including works cited and bibliography -focus on very specific but like items of work based on theme or subject matter of the work -you must identify each piece thoroughly; when, where, who, why, how and all of those other questions that “Art Historians ask,” being sure to use the words and concepts “Art Historians use” (Kleiner 2-13) -connect your selected topic to a contemporary (20th and 21st century) use or influence of the styles, methods, ideals, motivations and or context of the particular art works or artifacts you choose to examine
