Anthropology and You

Anthropology and You
This project is a review of professional anthropological literature. You are required to find one professional, peer-reviewed journal article in cultural anthropology that relates to your academic major (or a topic of particular interest if you do not yet have a major). You will summarize the anthropological research methods and conclusions presented in the article, note how they relate to the topics covered in our textbook (you may have to skip around a bit—use the index wisely), and evaluate how this study contributes/applies to your field of interest.

Anthropological articles are readily available from the AnthroSource website maintained by the American Anthropological Association. The link is below:

http://www.anthrosource.net/Default.aspx

You may also search JSTOR and Google Scholar for appropriate articles, but be forewarned that you will have to be very careful to limit your search to cultural anthropology journals and articles.
You may have to be creative in your use of search terms to find the best article for you.

AnthroSource (as well as other search engines) has/have links to a wide variety of professional anthropological journals which you can search and browse from any campus computer, or at home if you have an IU VPN connection. YOU SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED TO PAY FOR ANY ARTICLES. The journals provided by AnthroSource also contain newsletter stories, book reviews, and editorial material—DO NOT USE THESE. Your chosen article should be one that relays methodological research and stated conclusions based on ethnographic research (usually at least 10 pages long). If you have significant problems finding an appropriate article visit a reference librarian or my office for assistance. If you have concerns about your writing style or using proper bibliographic citations for this project please visit the IUSB Writer’s Room http://www.iusb.edu/~sbtutor/writersroom.shtml or contact me for consultation.
You may use your field’s preference citation style, though you must remain consistent.

You are required to submit IN CLASS:
1) The article you are discussing
2) The associated handout. PLEASE TYPE your responses.

Your grade will be based on how well you:
1) Choose and utilizeand CITE an appropriate anthropological research article as outlined above. (Proper bibliographic citation required)
2) Your synopsis of the article’s subject, methodology, findings and conclusions. (~1-2 paragraphs)
3) Connect the article’s subject and themes to AT LEAST 2 CHAPTERS from our textbook (you may have to read ahead). The connections may deal with methods, theories, comparative examples, or other topics from the textbook that help provide a more detailed discussion of the article. (~1 paragraph)
4) Evaluate/explain how this research applies to your particular field of interest. (~1-2 paragraphs)
5) Evaluate/explain how and why you feel the topic you studied could be further researched effectively. (~1 paragraph)
