The criticism will call on outside evidence to connect the content of the poem to a broader question: "How does the poem portray gender, and how does that portrayal compare to society’s expectation of gender? Alternately, how might a woman’s interpretation of the poem differ from a man’s?" The paper should have a thesis. And you’re arguing persuasively for your views, guiding the reader to understand and agree with you.
