Americans for Democratic Action

An interest group is an organization that is aimed at promoting, or preventing an action from taking place according to their belief in the course of action they are taking. This paper looks at one interest group in America, the Americans for Democratic Action. The paper discusses the membership of the group and the amount of money they use per year. The paper also looks at three issues they are involved in right now, and the techniques they are sing to push for the issue.

Americans for Democratic action (ADA) was founded by a group of like-minded people to promote an America that could work fairly for all. Among its founders are Eleanor Roosevelt and John Kenneth Galbraith. It advocates for liberal politics, liberal policies and as well, a liberal future. The organization sees the election of Barrack Obama as president of the United States of America as one of the realization of its dream. It works with allied organizations and the White House to propel its agenda. The organization draws membership across the country from people who identify with their vision and activities. The organization spends more than twenty billion dollars per year in its activities.

Some of the issues that the organization is working on now include health care reform, immigration and fair trade. Three lobbying techniques the organization employs include educating people on a policy they have undertaken, working through the law-makers to make changes in the law and collecting facts on the issues and handing them over to the stakeholders. On the issue of health care reform, the organization is lobbying for an insurance scheme that will cover as many people as possible, including the very young children. The organization educates people on how health care laws passed by the government will affect them personally, as well as small businesses. In their lobbying, the organization asks the people to pressurize their representatives to reject laws that will not work well on them, while at the same time they urge them to support the laws that will work well on the people. To make sure they have enough information, and also as a technique of lobbying, the organization collects statistics on the number of uninsured people in the country and the likely implications if a corrective measure is not taken.

On the issue of immigration, the organization uses a technique of coming up with statistics of the number of illegal immigrants and workers in the United States. They display them to the citizens and the lawmakers. The organization through lawmakers is proposing admission of more legal immigrants since their statistics show that immigrant workers are in a great demand in the US. In addition, the organization has proposed the awarding of full citizenship to children born by immigrants in the US. The organization also applies such techniques on the issue of free trade. For example, the organization teaches business owners and the common masses on the implications of free trade laws passed by the government. A good example is that the organization is pressuring the Obama administration to review some laws on free trade that were passed by President George Bush when he was in power. This is geared towards easing the burden of challenges that these rules brought upon the American citizens.

In conclusion, this paper has looked at the Americans for Democratic Action lobby group. It has discussed the origin of the organization and its membership. In addition, the paper has looked at some issues the organization is dealing with, and the technique it is using to push them through.
