Aerospace Materials & Component testing
g Material Testing Techniques
When selecting engineering materials it is important that the characteristics and properties
of such materials be tested for and analysed. Much of this work is done in materials and
metrology labs. Further analysis of components will be done once they are in service and it
is often necessary to be able to put the component back into service once such analysis has
been done. This assignment is divided into three categoriesa) Use of component testing: tensile, hardness & impact testingb) Common use of Non-destructive testing (NDT) techniquesc) Introduction to the use of metrologyNoteThis assignment counts as 15% of the overall mark for the unit Aerospace Materials
Component testing. 5% is for component testing, another 5% is geared towards NDT and
finally the other 5% is a discussion for metrology.Your Taska) Component Testingi) Give a brief description of THREE component testing techniques. Discuss briefly
what apparatus is used and how results are recorded and interpreted.ii) Choose one of your techniques and produce a lab report on this to include aim,
apparatus, method, results and conclusion. Be sure to write the report in 3
person past.b) Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)i) Comment on the application of N DT within the aerospace sector, commenting on
why it is used rather than destructive testing. Your discussion should include
typically what the engineer is trying to find.ii) Describe in more detail the application of ONE form of NDT technique. Discuss the
advantages and disadvantages of this technique over other NDT techniques
commonly used.c) Metrologyi) Give a brief introduction to the study of metrology, describe what metrology is
and why it usedj) Describe in more detail ONE of the gauges that might be used within a typical
metrology labN.B
The assignment should be written as a short report in standard font and size and be a
Harvard referenced. It should be approximately 1000 words in length.
