Adaptive leadership within a changing economy

Adaptive leadership within a changing economy

With the changing nature of the economy market of United States there is a need of defining a new leadership which is consisting with the changing nature of the states in which they tends to define the qualities of a leader and dynamics of organization. The following lines were mainly from the main points of Tichy and Ulrich in "Transformational Leadership".

The concept of transformational leadership is totally based on the five level of leadership which we will be discussing in coming paragraphs.

The leaders which are mentioned above are called transformational leaders which go beyond the mission, structure and human resources who can bring about fundamental changes in the political and cultural system of an organization. In the early 1980s various transformational leaders have argued about the changing nature of the United States economy and there is a need of revision in the organizational culture of the Unites States. Based on the number of assumptions, Tichy and Ulrich have outlined the dynamic change of organization where some of the assumptions are that the trigger event is the indication for need of change. Secondly it is about the change that unleashes mixed feelings. Third and fourth conditions are basically closely tied together in which third assumptions states that quick fix cannot work and fourth assumptions just take third assumption a little deeper.

There are basically three systems which provide resistance that is Cultural systems, technical systems and political systems in which technical system consist of task based habit and inertia. Political systems consist of internal coalitions against change or resource availability whereas cultural system includes the awareness that an organization is one thing.

Finally, there is suggestion given for the three phase process which was suggested by the Tichy and Ulrich in which it includes Endings, Neutral zone and New Beginnings. Endings should be understood and accepted by every individual who allows them to find a new sense of value in an organization. Neutral cone is the zone in which an individual feel disconnected from past and remain connected emotional with future and in the last phase of individual change which is new beginnings there is learning attitude shown by the employees from their past instead of dwelling in it.

One main question which was not involved in the discussion of Tichy and Ulrich is that "What happens when a transformational leader leaves an organization?" which makes parallel connection in some of the concept of non-profit classes which is also known as Founders Syndrome. The organization in which writer tends to work is a new, founded and on the strengths or vision of the charismatic leader who bears strong similarity to a transformational leader. Founders Syndrome is the situation in an organization in which the firm operates according to the personality of well-known person which includes chief executive, the founder and many more.

There is a short story of Lee Iacocca after leaving Chrysler, that tell about the achievements of the Iacocca which has started over 80 television channels and moved the company forward with its personal ego and charisma. Iacocca remained a transformational leader throughout his tenure and some years after the retirement of Iacocca there was a situation of crisis in front of Chrysler and was bought up by the Daimler Benz, a German manufacturer.

A book "Good to Great" written by Jim Collins in which there was presentation on the model of leadership called Level 5 leader which was found out to be quite inspiring by the writer of journal. If we talk about Level 5 leader then it bears a similarity to a transformational leader instead both the level 5 leaders and transformational leader guide the organization through the change. There is adjustment between organizational system and structure which create changes in the basic political and cultural system of an organization. The basic difference between the definition of transformational leader given by the Lee Iacocca and Ulrich and Tichy is of ego. The writer is more attracted towards the Level 5 leadership apart from transformational leadership which has the main reason of qualities of leadership which is striving for professional life and academic life.

The combination of personal humility and professionalism will lead an individual to produce great results for their organization and as some of the qualities of level 5 leaders is same as that of transformational leadership. The whole limelight was on the main points and discussion about the Tichy and Ulrich’s argument and there was comparison and contrasting seen in the concept of level 5 leadership which takes us to a conclusion in which there is no pinpoint on any of the type of leadership and considers both types of leaders as unique and exceptional. Despite of various types of differences in the leadership of leaders of both types but both of them focus on the collective organization. (Tichy, 2008)

Evaluation of Paper-Debatable Sentences-

There are few sentences which can create some kind of debate as an instance that there was a sentence in which there is changing of organizational culture which is talked about to remain competitive in the world market. In this sentence there is no point of changing the culture organization, the achievement of the target to remain competitive in the market can be fulfilled with the improvement of the employee skills which can be attain through proper training and many more add on which is required in the field.

As it is defined about the Lee Iacocca on which Chrysler was dependent was bought by a German based company Daimler Benz. The company was wholly dependent on the work of Lee Iacocca which was not correct and the other things was about the reference of ego from the side of Iacocca which was not at all his fault instead his work provides him positive attitude towards everything which was considered as ego.

The concept of level 5 leadership has more attracted the writer as transformational leadership has more qualities from the leadership of level 5 which was quite amazing from his side.

Missing Statement-

There were many missing issues and statements according to the topic selected which is Transformational leadership. The concept of transformational leadership was less explained as compared with concept of level 5 leadership. Most of the times there is only focus on the statements or issues raised by them which could be improved by taking various studies of different experts and people which have given view on the topic. The writer has missed the main points related with the transformational leadership as mainly focusing on the concept of level 5 leadership.

Assumptions-

There are few assumptions which are taken by the writer as defined about the four assumptions in the summary. It was basically the assumptions taken by the Tichy and Ulrich in which basically change in organizations are explained in which first assumption was about triggering events, second was about is about change unleashing mixed feelings and the third and fourth assumptions are based on the tying together of change in organization. Third assumption was that transformational leader is needed instead there is no quick fix for work and lastly which suggests that the transformational leadership is the key to revitalization.

Application of Study on UAE-

Transformational leadership as taken with account of scenario of United Arab Emirates can be described taking hospital where this type of leadership is mostly used. The population basically contains 80% of expatriates and 20% of indigenous population. There are bank environment which is also seen in the United Arab Emirates in which there is use of transformational leadership which helps in maintain decorum of the society. As seen there is so much competition which can be seen in the market of United Arab Emirates which could be solved through making individual change in an organization

There is a study which investigates the characteristics of transformational leadership of the model schools present in the United Arab Emirates, which helps in building relationship between opportunities in teacher learning and style in transformational leadership, as the result reflects about the more learning opportunities which a teacher get which possess transformational leadership characteristics. There was a relationship between transformational leadership characteristics and collegial enquiry and mentoring was found.

In the United Arab Emirates transformational leadership could be used as an imperative element in the development of the teacher. The learning given to the people living in the country focus more on spreading school culture. Few principals and teachers were interviewed about their leadership style in which mostly of them used the transformational leadership because it supports change and give confidence to the teachers to become leader, encouragement of professional attitude and most importantly supports collegial work.

Transformational leadership style is basically considered as the feminine style which gives emphasis on the stimulation of leader’s intellectual property, individual consideration and many other are considered as the feminine style or provide a feminine style to the transformational leadership style.

According to me, the concept of transformational leadership applied in the sector of teacher learning could be quite successful as there are many factors which play an important role in developing the teacher skills. The transformational leadership consists of ten dimensions which consist of demonstrating high performance, building school vision and goals, staffing, individualized support, community focus, fostering participation in school decisions. These dimensions help in better understanding the concept of transformational leadership. (Awamleh, 2007)

Similarity and Difference between both Papers-Similarity-

The similarities between the two journals can be firstly observed in the topic as both of them contain transformational leadership but in the second journal there is another topic that includes transactional leadership. The properties included in both the papers about the transformational leadership are same which contains same meaning of word indirectly as compared with the other journal. Basically the journals contain same authors which have given comments or arguments on the topic of transformational leadership. (Edlund, 2008)

Difference-

There are lots of differences in the two journals which can be seen firstly in the topic in which the other one contains an extra topic of transactional leadership. The matter in which the topic is elaborated is some kind of different in which various kinds of issues are discussed. The formats in which the two journals are written are different and the comparison have been done between transactional leadership and transformational leadership instead of that in other journal the two topics which have been taken is level 5 leadership and transformational leadership.
