1.3 THREADED DISCUSSION: WHAT IT MEANS TO BE CALLED
INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
This discussion is intended to help the emerging student of homiletics consider a clear call to the
Gospel work, with an emphasis on declaring Gods word. In particular, it is meant to lead the
student toward identifying, from a biblical perspective, a call to give Gods message.Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:
Identify, from a biblical perspective, what is meant by a call to declare the gospel.RESOURCES
BibleBACKGROUND INFORMATION
By now you have read the Exodus text regarding the call of Moses. No doubt, we can see that he
was reluctant to accept this call. But why? If anyone was well trained, it was Moses. He was
raised as a son of Pharaohs daughter, schooled as a prince of Egypt. He spent the first 40 years
of his existence as the grandson of the king, with all the privileges thereof. He had acclimated to
power. Further, during his second 40 years, he had served as a shepherd, so he was accustomed
to manual labor as well. Thus, he had moved in both elite and common circles. His reaction to
Gods call was one of reluctance, to say the least; it bordered on the insubordinate.INSTRUCTIONS
1. Read Moses call in Exodus 3-4.
2. Discuss the following:
a. Contextually, what is God asking Moses to do?
b. Why does God want Moses in particular to approach Pharaoh?
c. What is Moses reaction?
d. Why does Moses react that way?
e. Moses might very well have actually known this Pharaoh? To what extend might that have played into his reluctance?
f. Put yourself in this context- how do you think you probably would have reacted to this call?
g. Why would you have reacted that way?
h. Lastly, what is meant by a call to be Gods messenger?
i. Is there anything else you feel is germane to this discussion? This posts requires 150 words.1.3 TD: Called
