Why is the knowledge of different cultures important to effective communication¦¦..
Answer:
Communication provides a means of understanding for people drawn from diverse cultural backgrounds. The world has become a global village where people from different ethnicities commonly interact. Communication can be strongly hindered by lack of understanding of different cultures. (Ortemeier) In this paper we look at why understanding different cultures is of great value to effective communication.
Thesis
Knowledge of different cultures is effective in breaking communication barriers that hinder effective communication.
Passing a message from one person to another is highly dependent on ones understanding of beliefs, behaviors and traits. Culture determines peoples’ perception of things, including language. Culture, which to a large extent is learnt through communication, has a direct influence on how information is exchanged. Language, which is the pivot of communication, becomes apparent in culture.
Communication, whether verbal or otherwise, varies greatly from one culture to another. In some cultures some words are forbidden. Uttering such words could result in serious consequences. Some words may be used to convey a different message. Non verbal communication is emphasized in some cultures while others do not attach much importance to it. Different gestures may be interpreted differently. It is therefore not a surprise that sitting arrangements, personal space, facial expressions and gestures have become a source of conflict. Understanding these cultures will ensure that you pass the intended message, with little or no room for misinterpretation. This will help in avoiding conflict.
In conclusion it is clear that for communication to be effective the cultural barrier must be dealt with by increasing ones knowledge of different cultures. Culture and communication are inseparable. Culture is part of communication and communication is part and parcel of culture.
