1) What new threats did the Qing government faced in the the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries? How did the Qing respond to these problems? What would have been necessary to save the Qing regime from collapse?
2) What was the May Fourth Movement? What were some of the issues involved and various opinions that people expressed on these issues? Why was the movement significant? (Be sure to mention Lu Xun and early Communist writers).
3) Why did the Guomindang become the most powerful party in the 1920s and 1930s? How well did they lead China? Why was Chiang Kai-shek unsuccessful in eliminating his Communist rivals?
