Case Study #1
Please read the Case Study on “W.S. Darley & Company”, which I will fax it to you and please discuss your personal thoughts about the case and any opinions you may have after reading the case, you should do the following:
• Answer all questions following the Case Study.
• Your answers should reflect a full contribution.
• Questions should be answered thoroughly.
• Your total response should be at least three to four pages long. You may double space. You do not need to type the question again for your answers. The suggested format is not to type the questions just the answers.
The questions are:
1. Why do you think Bill Darley delegated the selection of his successor to the executive committee? What were some advantages and disadvantages to having the third generation develop their own succession plan?
2. What do you think might have happened to the company if the candidate had decided to rotate the president’s job among themselves? What are some of the positives and negatives you would expect as outcomes of such a leadership strategy?
3. How might serious disagreements at the office affect the feelings family members have for each other off the job? What kind of professional outside help would you recommend that the family use for handling serious disagreements?
4. In addition to a procedure for resolving disagreements, what else do you think the family should have in their constitution? Why?
5. If you were a member of the fourth generation of this family, what would you expect to learn about the company at family council meetings?
