Virginia Woolf, Christina Rossetti, and Aphra Behn

In the essay A Room of One’s Own, Virginia Woolf describes the ways in which society’s assumptions about and expectations for women are often at odds with those of women themselves.  Goblin Market, by Christina Rossetti and The Disappointment, by Aphra Behn contain female protagonists who reflect images of women from a woman poet’s point of view.  For this essay, compare and contrast Cloris, Lizzie, and Laura as images of female identity.  How are they similar or different, and what do those similarities or differences mean?

Think of your essay as an argument (because it is!).  You will need to prove the validity of your claim by providing support from the poems, in the form of examples and quotations. If you quote, do so sparingly and appropriately, and be sure to document your quotations.

You are to use no secondary sources for this assignment.  All ideas must be derived from your own analysis of the poems. Do not use any information from the Internet.
