The Rhetoric of Martin Luther King

THIS IS A GOOD START ANALYZING LETTER FROM BIRMINGHAM JAIL. HOWEVER,YOU HAVENT COVERED ALL OF THE REQUIREMENT OF THE ASSIGNMENT, TO ANALYZE THREE WORKS BY THE AUTHOR, AND TO ANALYZE HIS PERSUASIVE STRATEGIES(INCLUDING APPEALS TO ETHOS, PATHOS, OR LOGOS). PLEASE ADD THESE COMPONENTS TO YOUR ESSAY AND EDIT YOUR PAPER BY FOLLOWING WITH MY ADVICE WRITE ON YOUR PAPER. SEE BELOW FOR THE ORIGINAL ESSAY TOPIC DESCRIPTION. THIS DRAFT IS ALSO SOMEWHAT CONFUSING AND COULD USE MORE EVIDENCE FROM QUOTES TO SUPPORT YOUR POINTS. PERHAPS RELY LESS ON OUTSIDE SOURCES.
ESSAY TOPIC (thanks to Professor Fannin):
Martin Luther King Jr. Letter from Birmingham Jail (682)Choose one of these authors(I already chose), and locate two other essays by the same author. You will probably be able to locate other essays by our selected author on the open web. But another great, authoritative resource is the dvc library website, at library.dvc.edu. In particular, if you go to the electronic databases, you will find databases including full-text journal and newspaper articles. You might find particularly useful Academic Search Premier, Proquest, the
Literature Resource Center, and the New York Times. You might also be able to find magazine articles online from magazines like the New Yorker and Atlantic Monthly (see above voyager tutorial link, especially the
modules on the web, library databases, and ALICE). Please mail me if you are having trouble locating two other articles.
Using one of the above essays by King, Schlosser, Gladwell, or Baum, and the two other articles by the same author, you will be writing a analytical paper assessing the authors work. Your essay will assess the rhetorical appeals of this writer, his style, use of evidence, etc. You
will be synthesizing these three sources into a coherent, thesis-driven analysis. Use of specific quotes and a logical organization will be key
to developing a detailed, well-organized paper. In other words, youll be doing a rhetorical analysis of the given
author, looking at three of his worksone that we read in class, and
two that you find through research. Make mention of appeals to ethos,
pathos, and logos, and look at his writing style as evidenced through
the three works. You should also convey a good sense of what the main
point is of each of the works.
Sample thesis: In (essay 1), (essay 2), and (essay 3), Malcolm Gladwell
provides surprising insights into the everyday world around us through
stories, data, and logical analysis. . .
