1.Provide a definition of nationalism and explain the factors that gave rise to nationalism in the following colonized Southeast Asian States: Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), Vietnam , and the Philippines. Your answer should also include an explanation of the tensions existent within each state’s various nationalist groups (include at least two separate groups from each state).
2.Colonization and international pressures in Southeast Asia have resulted in large waves of migrations over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries. Explain, in particular, the benefits and the problems engendered by the phenomenon of Chinese migration in the following colonized states: British Malaya (including Singapore) and Vietnam, and in the non-colonized kingdom of Siam/Thailand. Your answer should also explain what is meant by the notion that the Chinese were “essential outsiders” in Southeast Asia.
