Prompt:

Do you think that the society presented in Fahrenheit 451 is a free society or an oppressed society? What are the components of the society that prove it is either free or oppressed? Write one fully developed essay (3 pages, 3+ paragraphs) that expresses the different elements of the society that make it either free or oppressed.

Assume you are writing to an educated audience that might not agree with your point of view.

Structure and Checklist:

___Carefully read pages 1-65 of Fahrenheit 451

___Write an informative yet creative title for your essay.

___ Identify the book, its author, and the general subject and focus of your essay in your introduction. You must have a thesis as the last sentence of the introduction. It must directly communicate your viewpoint on the prompt.

___ Make sure your topic sentence is an assertion (rather than a fact, question, quote, example, or statement of intent) that clearly previews your paragraph’s points.

___ Organize your supporting evidence carefully. Be sure that you explain every individual example immediately before you move on to another example. Include clear transitions.

___You must incorporate and analyze quotations from Fahrenheit 451 in this paragraph.

___ Write a strong concluding sentence that wraps up the paragraph.

___ Edit and proofread your sentences so that they are as clear and correct as possible.

___ Make sure you have one compound sentence and one complex sentence with correct punctuation in the paragraph

___ Include a properly formatted works cited page.
