Topic

The effects of adolescent personality on educational achievement

Background

Research on the personality-achievement relationship in adolescents and emerging adults has blossomed in the past half-decade. Part of this contribution can be attributed to seminal meta-analyses of personality-achievement total effects (e.g., O’Connor & Paunonen, 2007; Perera & DiGiacomo, 2013; Poropat, 2009; Poropat, 2011, 2014; Richardson, Abraham, & Bond, 2012). Beyond clarifying criterion validity, one of the chief goals of scientific inquiry is to understand how causal processes operate. Thus, it is unsurprising that another part of this contribution to recent personality-achievement research attempts to illuminate the pathways by which personality traits are related to achievement (Perera & DiGiacomo, 2015; Perera, McIlveen, & Oliver, 2015). In this literature, personality dimensions have been linked to achievement via multiple mediators, such as academic self-efficacy (Caprara, Vecchione, Alessandri, Gerbino, & Barbaranelli, 2011), motivation (Richardson & Abraham, 2009), academic effort (Noftle & Robins, 2007; Trautwein, Lüdtke, Roberts, Schnyder, & Niggli, 2009), learning styles (Komarraju, Karau, Schmeck, & Avdic, 2011), and homework behavior (Lubbers, Van Der Werf, Kuyper, & Hendriks, 2010).

Task Requirements

1. Locate and read the following three scientific articles on the mechanisms linking core personality traits with educational achievement in adolescents and/or emerging adults.
• Caprara, G. V., Vecchione, M., Alessandri, G., Gerbino, M., & Barbaranelli, C. (2011). The contribution of personality traits and self-efficacy beliefs to academic achievement: A longitudinal study. British Journal of Educational Psychology, 81, 78-96. doi: 10.1348/2044-8279.002004
• Perera, H. N., & DiGiacomo, M. (2015). The role of trait emotional intelligence in academic performance during the university transition: An integrative model of mediation via social support, coping and adjustment. Personality and Individual Differences, 83, 208-213. doi: 10.1016/j.paid.2015.04.001
• Poropat, A. E. (2009). A meta-analysis of the five-factor model of personality and academic performance. Psychological Bulletin, 135, 322-338. doi: 10.1037/a0014996

2. Prepare a 1,000-word essay that describes and critically analyzes the findings of the three articles with respect to the research issue of whether personality traits have an effect on educational achievement. In your essay you should
a. consider the theoretical rationale for the effects of personality on achievement as relevant to the articles;
b. review the findings in each of the articles with respect to the research issue;
c. highlight limitations of the studies and implications for inferences that readers may draw; and
d. conform to the APA (6th edition) publication manual and style guide in terms of referencing, presentation, and writing.

The essay should include an abstract, as per APA guidelines, of approximately 150 words (included in the final word count) that introduces the research issue/topic, describes your task, and summaries the conclusions drawn from your review of literature.

Marking Criteria

1. Theoretical rationale (10 marks)
Demonstration of an understanding of the theoretical reasons for the effect of personality traits on educational achievement in adolescents and/or emerging adults

2. Review of evidence (10 marks)
Review of findings reported in the articles, including description of results as well as critical analysis and synthesis of results with respect to the research issue

3. Limitations (10 marks)
Identification of study limitations and discussion of implications these limitations may have on inferences that may be drawn from the articles

4. APA adherence (10 marks)
Application of APA presentation and referencing protocol, encompassing organization, writing style, grammar usage, punctuation, spelling, in-text citations, and reference list. Writing should be characterized by clarity and succinctness, with continuity in expression, including the logical flow from one idea to the next
